How Much Pasta Do I Need to Feed 30 People

I recently had a friend ask me how much pasta per person I make. I started to think about how I never made the right amount of either ingredient. Either there is enough pasta to feed an army, or it's barely enough for my family of four. As for the sauce, it's sometimes swimming in marinara, and other times it's tough to get the bottom of the bowl coated. It seems so simple, but I never really took the time to get it right.

I decided to answer the question of how much pasta per person is needed. Also, how much sauce do we need? Throughout the research, I learned so much, and boy, was I doing it all wrong!

Why Do You Need To Measure Pasta?

Technically, you don't need to measure pasta. You throw a bunch into salted, boiling water and cook. But if you are trying to reduce your food waste or make sure you have the proper amount, it's best to measure. Let's learn how.

How Much Pasta Per Person

According to the USDA, one serving of pasta is one ounce. Regardless of shape, most kinds of pasta are in 16 oz boxes which, according to these standards, would serve 16 people. In reality, a one-ounce portion is a bit small. Most manufacturers go by a more realistic 2-ounce serving size, that is ¼ cup.

Remember that refers to a SERVING size. If you have hearty eaters that will have multiple helpings of your wonderful dinner, plan accordingly.

One cup per four people should yield a fair amount. To be honest, in my house, that's not enough. We are reasonable eaters, and I always do 1.5 cups. I find that to be the perfect amount if my crew is pretty hungry. Plus, if there are any leftovers, it's easy to repurpose.

Since pasta comes in all different shapes and sizes, the amount of cooked pasta varies greatly. Barilla has a great chart that breaks it all down. Noodles usually double in size after being cooked.

How Much Sauce For One Pound Of Pasta?

So we've cooked the perfect amount of pasta, now what do we do about the sauce? Italian dishes are not drowning in sauces. Go even lighter with creamy, rich sauces like Alfredo.

Do You Sauce Pasta Or Pasta Sauce?

It's like the chicken and egg situation; which comes first? The simple answer is that you add pasta to a warmed sauce.

Here's the proper way to combine pasta and sauce.

  1. Cook pasta according to directions.
  2. Heat the sauce in a large pan for a minute or two until warm. A high-sided frying pan works well.
  3. Drain the pasta, reserving one ladle full of pasta water (approximately ½ cup.) Starch from the cooking water helps the sauce adhere to the pasta.
  4. Put the pasta into the warmed sauce and add a tiny bit of fat (butter, cream, etc.).
  5. Allow the fat to melt, and then add some reserved pasta water. Start with ¼ cup. Mix well.
